Ever since the enormous economy crash of 2008 many people have begun to drastically change their lifestyles, implementing cutbacks that has led to the slashing of hundreds of thousands of jobs.
My parents told me it's been a good four years to be in college, citing that the job market has since collapsed while inflation has skyrocketed (see gas prices 2011). Which leads me to my first question. Has the job market gotten any better since 2008? I'm sure I could look up the figures, I'll most likely do so after writing about this, but what exactly will be the main differences of looking for a job when I'm out of school? Clearly this isn't the 90's anymore and not every city is bustling with new jobs due to a new wave of technologies, so what will us college kids do, and how will we go about it?
I'm pursuing a degree in journalism among other things (political science, and film) but how do most young adult make that leap from day drinker to civilized productive members of society? While more than a few of my friends have since moved back to their parents houses after graduation, I'm left to attend another year of school and hopefully set the blueprints up to get going after college. All my friends have degrees, so what's stopping them from making the world their own?
In many ways it seems like a college degree is the new standard for any job. I recently did an editorial on the 'old standards' of entering the workforce versus the 'new standards and going to college to eventually make more money.
But I really want your thoughts, what exactly does it mean to have a college degree or higher these days? Does it truly matter? Why or why note?
